CURRICULUM VITAE

Refaayi Ahmad was born in Derek (Northern Syria).

A graduate of the FINE ARTS ACADEMY in Damascus, he participated in the young Syrian “Spring” exhibitions of 1999, 2001 and 2003. In 2010 and 2011 he was an award winner in the category “Upcoming Artist” at a government exhibition in the National Museum of Damascus.

Subsequently his paintings (oil, acrylic, charcoal and ink on canvas) have been exhibited in Kuwait, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey, Germany, Italy and Austria.

Now of Austrian nationality, he is resident in Vienna where in 2018 and 2019 he participated in “Open Workshops” at the ALBERTINA museum.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

After having to leave my homeland, Syria, due to political developments which were no longer bearable for me as , my life as an artist experienced a total metamorphosis.

As an established artist with my own studio and gallery in the centre of Damascus, I was able to make a good living through my work for a number of years. At that time, classical and realistic themes were in demand, and were the essence of my artistic style.

The experiences of my flight by sea and by land have allowed me to grow as a person. It subsequently became possible for me to develop artistically in my new home, Austria, and to implement my experiences and impressions in my art.

One often sees “digits” or “barcodes” in my works - an indication of the “depersonalization” that not only an “outsider”, but every human being increasingly sees himself exposed to everywhere.

Some images point to the emergence of life.

Innocent and untouched, life unfolds to be immediately subjected to the power of money, corruption and unpredictabilileinwand .
