Andrea Penz, born in Vöcklabruck, Upper Austria, turned to painting and drawing in 1998 after working as an advertising designer. Her artistic career has been enriched by several years of nude studies at the University of Arts in Linz under the guidance of Professor Brehm, as well as training with Xenia Hausner, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Jürgen Messensee, and the Zhou Brothers. She now lives and works as a freelance artist in the Vöcklabruck area.
From 2006 to 2013, Penz focused intensively on the nude, both in drawing and painting. During this time, she also developed her personal painting style, characterized by a spontaneous and inquisitive approach that seeks to capture the essence of the moment. Her works often feature people or landscapes, driven either by curiosity or by a sense of emotional connection.
Another aspect of her work explores non-objective painting, delving into the inner state of the human being. This approach is essential to maintaining the creative process and often leads her back to more representational forms.
The unembellished preoccupation with the self has become a central theme in her work, playing a significant role in her creative process.
Her landscapes, often characterized by intense color, are not randomly chosen, but rather places with which the artist shares a deep, personal connection. These expansive and generous scenes capture mood through color and a simple formal language.
In 2020, partly due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Penz turned to working with layers of color. She initially experimented with watercolor, which later developed into larger acrylic works. In these pieces, the simplicity of the forms and lines became increasingly important. Currently, non-objectivity occupies a more significant place in her work
